THE TRUE MEANING OF SHALOM

Updated: Feb 4, 2025

Shalom or Peace, which one would you prefer?

The western concept of peace is usually about the absence of war or conflict, dissension, lack of transgression or hostility, and being free from the fear of aggression. Peace is the English word most often used to translate the Hebrew word Shalom. However the meaning of Shalom is not about the absence of something, but the presence of something. A believer in Yeshua (Jesus) could even say, “The Presence of Someone.” Of course, this is speaking of the Prince of Shalom, Jesus.

Isaiah 9:6 - For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace (Shalom).

Shalom in the Jewish culture speaks of wholeness. In this article by Doug Hershey, you will learn the meaning of Shalom and why you hear “Shabbat Shalom” from Friday evening until Saturday evening in Israel and Jewish communities. Understanding the meaning of Shalom when you read “peace” in the Bible gives a whole new clarity to many Bible verses.

In Sozo ministry, Jesus does what He came to do. (Mt 1:21) He “sozos” us from our sins. Sozo means to rescue or save, heal, deliver and make whole. The Prince of Shalom comes to fill us with His Shalom. That is a sweet deal. God always "trades up".
